I remember growing up, I’d watch my dad push the lawn mower on Saturday mornings or spend hours watering each plant, tree, and patch of grass. Now, I go home and everything is manual, from the sprinkler system to breakfast. I’m sure my dad isn’t the only man who has conformed to technology advances. Breakfast is served in a microwavable box and the garden is tended to by a system of pipes and timers. And what has taken the place of Saturday morning chores? Many men, and women, have settled in front of a TV set or computer screen, leading to sedentary lifestyle, weight gain, and increasing your risk of developing deadly diseases.

This week we are celebrating Men’s Health Week, which is a great time for men all over the world to take inventory of their health; including nutrition, stress management, and exercise. Are you consuming a nutritious breakfast? Are you exercising regularly? When was the last time you had a physical checkup?

Currently, the top health threats for men are heart disease and cancer; both of which can be minimized in men with exercise, diet, not smoking, and increasing other healthy habits. Just this year, there have been over 230,000 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States and 29,720 deaths. With prostate health being a major concern, especially in older men, making sure you are getting adequate amounts of exercise and consuming a healthy diet are vital to the health of all men.

A few other tips for men to get started on improving their health:

Get Enough Sleep – As a general recommendation, adults need anywhere from 7 to 9 hours of good sleep a night.

Say No to Tobacco – Smoking increases your risk for many cancers, heart disease, lung disease and many other smoking-related illnesses.

Exercise Regularly – Adding moderate exercise of just 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, including some strength training, highly improves your health.

Eat Healthy – Eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins will help reduce your risk of developing heart disease, high-blood pressure, diabetes, and several other illnesses.

Get Checked Regularly – Making sure your health is up to par by having proper physical exams can make the world of a difference to your longevity.

In a just a few days, fathers around the country will be partaking in a day in which they are celebrated for their love, support, guidance, and many other contributions they make to their families. Sunday, June 16th is Father’s Day in the US. For those of you dad’s out there, setting a healthy example for your children can be the best contribution you can make to their lives and they will certainly thank you later. The best part about starting up your Youngevity business is that you know people who have had an enormous amount of success, who have been exactly where you are. Starting this new chapter in your life can be exciting and a bit scary. The chance to hear from these leaders and learn from their journey could be extremely beneficial. To start things off, I talked to Senior Vice Chairman Blake Graham.

How are you using the Success from Home Magazine to help build your business?

In Youngevity we often share Dr. Wallach’s message and CD with people that fall in love with the 90 for Life crusade and the products. One key to building a strong business that reaches thousands and thousands of people is to help inspire many of the people that already love the products to get involved in helping us promote Dr. Wallach’s 90 for Life message. The Success from Home magazine can be one of the tools to help inspire people to “upgrade” into the business, especially as they read story after story of people from all walks of life that are being successful sharing the message. And it gives great information on Dr. Wallach’s incredible mission. It is a tool that I believe everyone — whether working on their financial health or just on their physical health — can benefit from.

How do you decide whom to spend your time with?

When you have more things to do with your time than you have time to do them, it becomes essential to prioritize. God and family always come first, and other people are a close second. As much as possible, I make it an effort to bring my family along. That is why you will see my wife and our daughters at conventions, and why we encourage people to bring their families with them when we go on SEMD cruises and incentive trips.

There is also another group of people that warrant significant individual time and attention, even if they may be deep down in the organization and those are the people that are the other Generals in the Dr. Wallach Crusade. This is a HUGE key to building an organization that grows even when you’re not there. If there is someone that by giving some personal time, attention and coaching to I can help that person impact many, many others, and especially if it empowers them to build an organization that continues to grow, it is a valuable investment of time and energy. And I also believe that you help out others that are also really contributing to the crusade. I have many close “cross-line” friends (people outside my organization) because as we help each other, we understand that “a rising tide raises all ships.”

Many people think that in order to be successful you need to develop down lines all over the country. What are your feelings on that and how much do you need to travel to grow your business?

In our day and age of technology — emails, Facebook, texts, and webinars — make it easier than ever to communicate with people despite distances. And it is good to use these resources to save time and reach more people at the same time. But a post on Facebook doesn’t replace a real face-to-face conversation or the “belly-to-belly” interaction. As a result, we do numerous webinars each and every week where people from all over the country and even internationally can participate, but I also travel — especially where I can bring my family along — to areas where I feel that I can help contribute to their growth, and I try to do it in such a way that they can continue to grow even when I am not there. For people who aren’t in a position to do as much traveling, I advise them to use balance in their business building. Make sure that you allow travel for important and critical events, such as the Corporate Convention once a year, or a Dr. Wallach lecture within a 3 to 5 hour drive. And don’t just go alone — take as many people along with you as you can! Understand that as your business builds, smart business owners take a percentage of their incomes to reinvest back into the business. This can take the form of expenses for travel or helping some of the people in your organization with a special project.

I understand that sometimes traveling can be a sacrifice — but one of my ecclesiastical leaders explained the definition of sacrifice in a way that puts travel and other sacrifices in the business in the proper perspective. “Sacrifice is giving up something GOOD, for something BETTER.” That is why I always encourage attendance at conventions and regional events — because the time and money that you may invest to get there can pay incredible dividends in terms of what events can do for your business.

What does the future hold for you and Youngevity? Where do you see you and your business in the next 10 years?

Youngevity has gone from a small size company to where it is now in the top 100 in the direct sales industry in the world, and we are excited to see it reach the top 10, and possibly even #1 over the next few years. In the next few years I expect that we will also see Youngevity enter into a new era of strategic international expansion, and the conventions will go from attendance in the thousands of people to attendance in the tens of thousands of people. Why do we expect this growth? Because as new tools are developed, the SYSTEM becomes even better and 1) helping people be healthy with 90 for Life, and 2) helping people be financially healthy with 90 for Life. Health with the 90 for Life system will become even more automatic!

It’s no wonder why Blake has had so much success and has become a million dollar earner through Youngevity. Learning from leaders like Blake is one of the best ways to help your business flourish. The once refreshing taste of a soda pop on a warm summer day is no longer what it used to be. Where we use to consume sodas as a treat or way to indulge our sweet tooth every now and again, we have now become dependent on them; many people even have a soda with each meal. Not only that, portion sizes have become outrageous, with many convenience stores and fast food restaurants offering soda drinks that are over 50 ounces! When McDonalds offered its first soda drink in 1955, it was 7 ounces compare that to the large drink they now offer which is 30 ounces and contains 76g of sugar! That is way over the American Heart Association recommended daily intake of sugar which is 36g for men and 24g. And what does sugar contribute to… diabetes!

We’ve all heard Dr. Wallach lecture us on the negative effects of soda. Not too long ago, I read an article on huffingtonpost.com that relayed information on a study which found that consuming a can of soda daily, increased one’s risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 18 percent and those who consumed 2 sodas daily were 18 percent more likely to have a stroke than those who consumed one.¹ These numbers are all from simply consuming soda and do not take into consideration other risk factors such as age and physical activity levels. If you think switching to a diet soda might keep you safe, think again.

Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming sugar-free or diet soda drinks, may also increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This particular study followed 66,118 women over the course of 14 years and found that both diet and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption was linked with a higher risk of developing diabetes in 1,369 women.² This study, however, did not distinguish other factors, such as if these women were prone to diabetes, or whether the types of artificial sweeteners consumed, which could be linked to developing diabetes. Still, it’s no secret that even diet soda drinks can have a negative impact on one’s health.

With millions of Americans diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and still many others at risk, according to the American Diabetes Association, decreasing ones consumption of soda beverages is necessary in pursuing a healthy lifestyle. Trying to Find a Balance

Stress can have major negative effects on not only your physical health, but your mental health as well. Aches and pains, moodiness, loss of sleep, frequent colds, depression, anxiety; stress is a big cause of all of these mental and health concerns. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, stress related illness could be attributed to almost 80 percent of all doctor visits.

One of the biggest causes of stress is your job. Being your own boss, and working from home can really burn you out. The key to avoiding this type of stress and living a happy life is finding balance between work and your personal time. So here are some quick tips to help find that balance.

#1-Take Account of Your Day
Take account of all the activities that don’t positively impact your life. Make a note of everything you do that isn’t work related, and figure out which are time wasters or energy zappers. Cut out all those negative influences. According to Marilyn Puder-York, PhD, a psychologist and executive coach in New York and Connecticut. “Many people waste their time on activities or people that add no value — for example, spending too much time at work with a colleague who is constantly venting and gossiping.” When your workday is productive, it’s easier to shut down and enjoy yourself at the end of the day.

#2-Build Downtime
With tip number 1 in mind, build some downtime into your busy schedule. This not only helps keep your workday productive, but it ensures that you’re able to take time for yourself. Try waking up an hour earlier, sit down, enjoy a cup of coffee, and ease into the day. Get rid of that rushed feeling that comes from squeezing your morning routine into the smallest chunk of time possible.

Remember the old hobby that you used to love? Or that stack of books you’ve been meaning to read? Schedule some time each day to guarantee you’re able to get back to doing something you love.

#3- Concentrated Relaxation
I know I might lose some of you here, but stick with me. The benefits of concentrated thinking and meditation are undeniable. According to a recent study at the University of California, Davis Center for Mind and Brain, meditation is linked to decreased levels of the stress hormone cortisol. “Everyone should sit in meditation for 20 minutes a day, unless you’re too busy; then you should sit for an hour.”

#4-Exercise
I know exercise sounds like a lot of work and no play, but one of the best ways to improve mental health is by improving physical health. Get out a couple times a week for a bike ride or walk. It’s a great way to get your mind off of work, and clear your head. Not to mention, help with that Healthy Body Challenge!

When you hear the word probiotics, what comes to mind? Good bacteria? Digestive Support? Intestinal Health? The Internet and You!

One of the biggest pitfalls of working from home is the constant access to distractions. The biggest of those distractions is, you guessed it, the Internet. It’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole and spend a whole day watching YouTube videos, checking sports updates and looking at pictures of goofy animals. Instead why not optimize your Internet time.

We’re living in amazing times. The access to information has never been this easy. There are amazing tools all over the web that can help you be more productive and help with building your business. I could literally spend days on days creating a list of all the websites devoted to productivity and learning, so instead I’ll give a few of my favorites that I use on a daily basis.

T.E.D Talks
With some of the best, not to mention free, information on the web, TED takes my number one spot. If you’ve never heard of TED, it’s worth a visit.

TED is an amazing organization. A nonprofit devoted to ideas worth spreading. It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, and Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. The best talks and performances from TED and partners are available to the world for free. More than 1400 TED Talks are now available, with more added each week. So instead of watching that hilarious cat video, go and learn something!

Lifehack
There are so many amazing resources on the Internet like lifehack.org. Lifehack is your source for tips to help improve all aspects of your life. It is widely recognized as one of the premier productivity and lifestyle blogs on the web. This site is dedicated to life hacks, which is a phrase that describes any advice, resource, tip or trick that will help you get things done more efficiently and effectively.

Khan Academy
Who says you can’t teach and old dog new tricks? Khan Academy is a not-for-profit with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education for anyone anywhere. Lectures are available in easy to digest, 10 minute chunks.

All of the site’s resources are available to anyone. It doesn’t matter if you are a student, teacher, home-schooler, principal, adult returning to the classroom after 20 years, or a friendly alien just trying to get a leg up in earthly biology. Khan Academy’s materials and resources are available to you completely free of charge.

Greatist
One of the biggest parts of promoting Youngevity’s Healthy Body Challenge is practicing what you preach. What I mean by that is GETTING HEALTHY! A great tool to help you on that journey is greatist.com.

Greatist.com is a trusted health and fitness source for the young, savvy, and social. Leading a healthy and fit lifestyle can be a challenge, and Greatist is there to make it easier. Every article is fun, friendly, and relatable, inspiring and informing healthier choices. Choose to become a healthier, happier you.

My favorite part of Greatist is the “happiness” section. Life can be stressful, and this section on the Greatist site gives you tips to help with your mental well-being ranging from stress management to inspirational stories.

It’s 2013 and we’re just hitting the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Internet. Nobody really knows the true impact the World Wide Web is going to have on the pages of history; it’s too early to tell. What isn’t too early to tell is how you can use this amazing tool RIGHT NOW. If you aren’t learning something new every single day, you aren’t using the Internet (or your brain) correctly.
